Signs you need broken tooth repair today
Teeth break in small ways and big ways. A corner chips off on an ice cube. A molar cracks on a popcorn kernel. A front tooth snaps in a fall off a bike. The sooner we see it, the more of the tooth we can usually keep.

Come in today if you notice any of these:
- A sharp edge that cuts your tongue or cheek
- A jolt of pain when you bite and release
- A tooth that aches with cold drinks or cold air
- A pinkish dot showing at the center of the break, which is exposed nerve and needs covering quickly
- A piece that moves when you touch it
Even a chip that doesn't hurt deserves a look. Enamel keeps bacteria out, and once it's gone, decay gets in. A small repair now can save you a root canal later.
If the same accident left you dizzy, knocked you out, or you can't close your jaw, go to the emergency room first. Methodist Stone Oak Hospital and North Central Baptist Hospital are both in Stone Oak. Come to us once you're cleared.
What happens at your same-day visit
We look at the tooth, then we X-ray it. The picture tells us the depth of the break and whether it has reached the nerve. If the tooth is sensitive, we numb it before we do anything else.
A small chip that doesn't hurt usually gets smoothed and polished, or a thin layer of tooth-colored resin is bonded over the edge and shaped in the same visit.
A larger break gets a bonded filling, or a crown if too much structure is gone for a filling to hold. A temporary crown goes on while the permanent one is made.
A crack that reaches the nerve needs the nerve treated before the tooth is sealed. We do that root canal here, then cover the tooth with a crown.
A tooth split below the gum line usually can't be saved. We tell you plainly, and we take it out the same day. Our emergency tooth extraction page explains how that goes.
Cost of broken tooth repair in San Antonio
The $125 exam and X-rays are the first step for every broken tooth. After the exam, our dentist tells you what the tooth needs and hands you the price in writing. Smoothing, bonding, a crown, a root canal and an extraction each carry their own fee.
We take cash, cards and most major PPO plans. Pricing works the same way for every visit, and our cost and insurance page spells it out in order.

Frequently asked questions
Should I keep the piece of tooth that broke off?
Yes. Drop it into a small cup with a splash of milk (or your own spit) and carry it in. Front-tooth fragments that are clean can sometimes be bonded back on. Even when that's not possible, seeing the piece helps our dentist judge what repair will hold.
How do I handle a broken tooth until my visit?
Rinse your mouth with warm water. If the edge is sharp, press a bit of sugarless gum or dental wax over it to protect your tongue. Do your chewing on the opposite side. Anything very hot, very cold or hard can wait. An over-the-counter pain reliever is fine if you can take it.
Does a chipped tooth always need a crown?
No. Most small chips are smoothed or bonded with resin in one visit. A crown is for a tooth that has lost a large part of its structure or has a crack running through it, because a filling can't hold that tooth together. The exam decides it, and you get the price in writing either way.
