Signs you need emergency wisdom tooth extraction today
Plenty of sore wisdom teeth get to stay. Some just need the gum around them cleaned, which we cover on the wisdom tooth pain page. Extraction is the answer when the tooth itself is the problem.

That usually means one of these:
- The gum over the tooth has been infected more than once
- The tooth is stuck sideways under the gum and pushing on the molar in front
- The tooth is too far back to keep clean, and decay has set in
- A cyst has formed around the crown of the tooth
- Swelling and pain keep coming back
A tooth like that doesn't improve with time, and the molar in front can be damaged along the way. Taking the wisdom tooth out ends the cycle.
A swollen face, a fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing means the emergency room comes before our office. Methodist Stone Oak Hospital and North Central Baptist Hospital are both in Stone Oak. Come to us once you're cleared.
What happens at your same-day visit
Nothing gets decided until the X-ray is up. It shows the angle of the roots, how close they run to the nerve in the lower jaw, and how much bone covers the tooth. Simple or surgical gets decided from that picture.
Simple extraction applies when the wisdom tooth has fully come through the gum and stands upright. We numb the area with local anesthetic, loosen the tooth, and lift it out. You feel pressure while it's worked loose.
Surgical extraction applies when the tooth is still under the gum, lying sideways, or only partly through. After numbing, a small opening is made in the gum, a little bone may be cleared, and the tooth is often divided so each piece comes out through a smaller space. The site is cleaned and closed with stitches that dissolve on their own.
Our dentists do both kinds right here. You bite on gauze until the bleeding slows and leave with written aftercare instructions.
Cost of emergency wisdom tooth extraction in San Antonio
The $125 exam and X-rays are the same whether the tooth turns out to be simple or surgical. The extraction itself is a separate fee, and a surgical extraction costs more than a simple one because it takes more steps. You see the figure in writing before we begin.
We take cash, cards and most major PPO plans. Our cost and insurance page shows the path from exam to written price, and what to have with you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I keep from getting dry socket?
After an extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket and protects the bone underneath. If that clot comes loose, the bone is exposed and the ache gets sharp a few days later. That's dry socket. To protect the clot, stay off straws and cigarettes, don't spit hard, and skip rinsing altogether for the first 24 hours. After that, rinse gently with warm salt water. If the pain climbs instead of fading, call us and we'll dress the socket.
What can I eat after a wisdom tooth extraction?
Day one is soft and cool: mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, or a smoothie spooned rather than sipped. Skip anything hot, crunchy, or spicy, and chew on the other side. Normal food comes back over the next few days as the site settles.
Can I drive myself home?
Yes. We use local anesthetic, so you're awake throughout and can drive yourself. Your lip and tongue stay numb for a few hours, so hold off on eating until the feeling returns.
Can you take out a wisdom tooth on a Sunday?
Yes. We're open Sunday from 8am to 8pm, the same as every other day, and our dentists do simple and surgical extractions on weekends. Call (210) 807-8793 or walk in.
