Signs you need knocked-out tooth treatment today

Root and all, the tooth is out. There's no other sign to look for. It happens at a Friday night football game or on a wet pool deck in July. The cells on the root start dying the moment the tooth dries out, so the first few minutes decide a lot.

Glass of milk and a small lidded container on a kitchen counter, ready to transport a knocked-out tooth

The first-hour rules:

  1. Lift the tooth by its white chewing end. Keep your fingers off the root.
  2. If there's dirt on it, a quick swish in milk or cool water does it, a few seconds at most. No scrubbing, nothing with soap.
  3. Ease it back into its hole if you can manage, facing the correct way, and hold it there by biting lightly on a clean cloth or gauze.
  4. If it won't go back, carry it in cold milk, or park it between your cheek and gum so your own saliva keeps it wet. Water and tissue paper both dry out the root.
  5. On a hot San Antonio day, keep the container cool. A tooth left on a dashboard in August won't survive the drive.
  6. Call us and come in.

The same urgency applies to a tooth that's been shoved sideways or driven up into the gum yet is still attached. If the hit also left you dizzy, confused, or with a jaw that won't close, go to the emergency room first. Methodist Stone Oak Hospital and North Central Baptist Hospital are both in Stone Oak. Once you're cleared, come to us with the tooth.

What happens at your same-day visit

A quick look at the socket and the tooth comes before anything else; X-rays follow, to find a broken root, a fractured socket wall, or damage to the teeth on either side. Then we numb the area.

If the tooth can be saved, we rinse the socket gently, seat the tooth where it belongs, and stabilize it with a splint: a thin wire bonded across the neighboring teeth. The wire keeps the tooth from moving while the ligament fibers on the root knit back to the bone, usually a couple of weeks. Written instructions go home with you.

If it can't be saved, because the root snapped or the tooth was dry for too long, reimplanting it won't hold. We say so clearly, clean the socket, stop the bleeding, and talk through the next step. If your tooth fractured instead of coming out whole, our broken tooth repair page is the one to read.

In the weeks that follow, a reimplanted tooth usually needs a root canal, because the nerve inside rarely survives the injury. We explain that before you leave.

Cost of knocked-out tooth treatment in San Antonio

The $125 exam and X-rays cover the tooth, the socket, and the neighbors. You get the reimplant-and-splint fee in writing before we start; the later root canal is quoted separately when it's time. We move fast, but you still see the number first.

Cash, cards and most major PPO plans are accepted. Our cost and insurance page describes how an exam turns into a written quote, if you want the detail.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do I have once a tooth is knocked out?

Dry, the root cells begin to die within about thirty minutes. Stored in milk or saliva, or seated back in the socket, the tooth has a fair shot for a few hours. An hour or less is the goal; past that, bring it along anyway and let our dentists judge it.

My child lost a baby tooth in a fall. Does it go back in?

No. Pushing a baby tooth back into the socket can damage the adult tooth forming underneath it. Still bring your child in. We make sure the whole tooth came out, check the neighboring teeth, and X-ray the area to confirm the adult tooth below wasn't hurt.

What if I can't find the tooth?

Come in anyway. We X-ray the socket to be sure no fragment is left in the gum, check that the socket wall isn't fractured, and control the bleeding. If you find the tooth later, put it in milk and call us.
