Signs you need a crown or filling replaced today

It usually announces itself at a meal. You bite into a caramel or a tortilla chip and feel something hard that isn't food. Sometimes there's no drama at all: your tongue lands in a crater on a molar that was smooth yesterday.

Come in today if:

  • A crown is in your hand, your pocket, or a napkin
  • A filling fell out and left a rough crater in the tooth
  • The tooth is suddenly sensitive to cold or sweet
  • A crown feels loose and rocks when you push on it

Underneath a crown or filling, the tooth was trimmed down when it was prepared, so it's smaller and softer than a whole tooth. Without its cover, it's open to bacteria, temperature, and cracking. A few days unprotected can turn a quick re-cement into a root canal.

Pain that throbs or comes with swelling in the gum points to an infection rather than a missing cover. Our toothache relief page covers that.

What happens at your same-day visit

We examine the tooth and take X-rays to see what's left underneath and whether decay has crept in. Then we check the crown itself.

A crown that fits and is intact gets cleaned and re-cemented. The old cement is removed, the tooth is dried, and the crown goes back on with fresh dental cement. You bite down to check the fit before you leave.

A crown that's cracked, worn through, or no longer fits gets remade. We prepare the tooth, take an impression, and place a temporary crown while the permanent one is made. You come back to have it seated.

A lost filling is replaced. We clean out any softened tooth and decay, then place a new tooth-colored filling shaped to your bite in the same visit. When not enough tooth remains to anchor a filling, a crown becomes the fix.

A tooth broken down to the gum line or split may not be worth saving. Then we explain the emergency tooth extraction option plainly.

The $125 exam and X-rays cover the look at the tooth and the picture of what's underneath. Re-cementing a crown, remaking a crown, and placing a new filling are separate fees, and you see the one that applies to you in writing before any work starts. Re-cementing is the least involved, one more reason to bring the crown.

We take cash, cards and most major PPO plans. The route from exam to written price is on our cost and insurance page, along with what we accept.

Frequently asked questions

Is it OK to stick the crown back on with glue?

No. Household glue and super glue aren't made for the mouth, they can damage the crown and the tooth, and a crown set crooked can crack when you bite. For a few hours, temporary dental cement from a pharmacy is a safer stopgap, but bring the crown to us the same day so it goes on correctly.

How do I protect the tooth until my visit?

Keep the crown in a small bag or container. Eat on the opposite side and avoid foods that are very hot, very cold, or sticky. A sensitive exposed tooth can be shielded with a dab of sugarless gum or dental wax for the ride over. Then call (210) 807-8793 or walk in; we're open until 8pm every day.

Will I need a new crown or can the old one go back on?

If the crown is whole and still seats snugly, it's usually re-cemented. If it's cracked, the tooth underneath has decayed, or the fit has changed, a new crown is the sound choice. The exam and X-ray answer it, and the price is written down either way.
