Signs you need wisdom tooth pain relief today

Third molars arrive last, and by then the jaw has often run out of space for them. A tooth that only half breaks through leaves a flap of gum over it. Food slips under the flap, bacteria follow, and the gum swells. That infection is called pericoronitis, and it's a common reason a wisdom tooth suddenly hurts.

Calm consultation corner in a bright San Antonio dental office

Call us today if you have:

  • A dull ache at the very back of the jaw that's getting worse
  • Swollen, red gum behind your last molar
  • Opening wide, chewing or swallowing hurts
  • A foul taste, or a smell, coming from behind the last molar
  • Pressure pushing on the tooth in front

A wisdom tooth can also hurt without any infection. An impacted tooth sits sideways under the gum and presses on the root of the molar in front. That pressure builds slowly, then flares. None of it shows from the outside, which is why the X-ray matters.

Swelling that spreads into the cheek or neck, a fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing means a deeper infection. Go to the emergency room first: Methodist Stone Oak Hospital and North Central Baptist Hospital are both in Stone Oak. Our dental abscess treatment page explains what that infection looks like.

What happens at your same-day visit

The X-ray does most of the talking here. It shows the angle of the wisdom tooth, how much of it is through the gum, where the roots sit, and whether the molar in front has been damaged.

Relief comes next, and it depends on the cause.

Pericoronitis is cleaned out. We flush under the gum flap, remove trapped debris, and, when the infection has moved past the flap, write an antibiotic prescription.

An impacted tooth pressing on its neighbor can't be cleaned into comfort. We can numb the area for the day, but the lasting fix is removing the tooth.

Then comes the decision. If the tooth has room and can be kept clean, it can stay. If it's trapped, repeatedly infected, or damaging the tooth beside it, we recommend taking it out. Our dentists do that here, often the same day. The emergency wisdom tooth extraction page describes the procedure, simple and surgical, and the recovery.

Cost of wisdom tooth pain relief in San Antonio

The $125 exam and X-rays are the first step. Cleaning out an infected gum flap, a prescription, or an extraction each has its own fee, written down before any work starts. If you want relief today and time to think about the extraction, we quote it that way.

We take cash, cards and most major PPO plans. Our cost and insurance page traces how the exam becomes a written number, in the order it happens.

Frequently asked questions

Will a sore wisdom tooth settle down by itself?

Sometimes, for a while. A pericoronitis flare can settle after a few days of careful rinsing, but the gum flap is still there, and it tends to flare again. Pain from an impacted tooth pressing on a neighbor doesn't resolve on its own. An exam and X-ray tell you which one you have.

What can I do for wisdom tooth pain tonight?

Swish warm salt water around the back of the mouth a few times, and again after each meal, so it flushes under the flap. An over-the-counter pain reliever is fine if you can take it. Eat on the opposite side, and brush the area softly to keep debris out. Then call (210) 807-8793; a real person answers and holds you a time at 8am.

Will you pull the wisdom tooth on the same visit?

Often, yes, if the X-ray shows the tooth can come out safely and you want it done. If the infection is severe, we may clean the area and start medication first, taking the tooth out after the swelling has calmed. Our dentist explains the reasoning either way.
